Industrial Applications of Cardanol

Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a renewable phenolic raw material widely recognized in the chemical industry for its unique molecular structure. Its primary components, including cardanol, cardol, and anacardic acid, provide reactive functional groups that enable extensive chemical modification for industrial applications.

Cardanol derived from CNSL is extensively used in the production of phenolic resins, epoxy curing agents, friction materials, surface coatings, adhesives, and specialty polymer systems. Thanks to its aromatic ring combined with a long unsaturated hydrocarbon chain, cardanol offers excellent flexibility, hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, and thermal stability in final formulations.

Compared to petroleum-based phenols, CNSL-based materials offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative without compromising performance. This makes CNSL an increasingly important feedstock in the development of bio-based resins, protective coatings, brake linings, laminates, and advanced polymer materials for automotive, construction, and industrial sectors.
